How TV series Utopia got its comic book look:

Post-production is the last stage of film production: sound, editing and titling is completed. This stage isn't for correcting mistakes, however its a chance to do so.

Post-production is shown to be really important in Utopia, as they use this to carefully add colour corrections to each shot. By adding colour corrections to the series, it creates a 'comic' book look. They used a three-strip Technicolor process comprised of the opposite colours -- yellows, cyan, magentas, where as normally they would construct it with greens, blues and reds. This gives boldness to the scenes and distinct elements. It also gives them a way to manipulate the colours, as they could make the skies bluer. Now in series 2, they use sets which are prepared for grading to help make the shots even bolder, the sets are more yellows, cyans and magentas as they can afford it.
