Conventions of thrillers:

As we are getting close to planning our thriller opening, we are looking closer into what thrillers actually are. This will make our opening more realistic.

Thriller is a broad genre of literature, film, gaming and television. It includes number, often overlapping sub-genres. A thriller usually includes a character being protagonist and a character being the opposite, antagonist. Thrillers create shock and excitement from sudden, unexpected actions, movements and sounds.

Sub-genres:

  • Spy thrillers - James Bond
  • Conspiracy thrillers - JFK
  • Horror thrillers - The Cabin in the Woods
  • Action thrillers - The Dark Knight
  • Military thrillers - Shooter

Typical conventions of thrillers:
  • Low key lighting
  • Dark clothing
  • Dark, empty, abandoned house - location
  • A ringing phone
  • Lights flickering
  • Noises/movements
  • Non-diegetic sounds
  • Title of 'this is based on a true event'
  • Reverse zoom

Our thriller opening will most likely include dark clothing to show a figure. A ringing phone to add suspense. We also think filming in the woods is a great way to show the typical conventions of thrillers as they are usually empty.
