Thriller is a broad genre of literature, film, gaming and television. It includes number, often overlapping sub-genres. A thriller usually includes a character being protagonist and a character being the opposite, antagonist. Thrillers create shock and excitement from sudden, unexpected actions, movements and sounds.
Sub-genres:
- Spy thrillers - James Bond
- Conspiracy thrillers - JFK
- Horror thrillers - The Cabin in the Woods
- Action thrillers - The Dark Knight
- Military thrillers - Shooter
Typical conventions of thrillers:
- Low key lighting
- Dark clothing
- Dark, empty, abandoned house - location
- A ringing phone
- Lights flickering
- Noises/movements
- Non-diegetic sounds
- Title of 'this is based on a true event'
- Reverse zoom
Our thriller opening will most likely include dark clothing to show a figure. A ringing phone to add suspense. We also think filming in the woods is a great way to show the typical conventions of thrillers as they are usually empty.
